Red blood cells are the cells in your blood that carry oxygen. If you have too few red blood cells, your body might not get all the oxygen it needs. Iron deficiency anemia occurs when there is not enough iron to make the hemoglobin (carries the oxygen) in red blood cells

Pregnant women may develop iron deficiency anemia because of the increased iron requirements of the growing fetus and placenta.

Feeling tired/weak, headaches, craving for ice, clay, chalk, laundry detergent—this is called PICA.

If you are positive for iron deficiency anemia your provider will most likely prescribe oral iron, some women may even require IV Iron or a blood transfusion during pregnancy!
