Now that my first trimester is over, I thought I would give you guys a recap!
I am not going to lie, my first trimester has been tough and it’s really given me a new perspective for all my patients. TBH, It’s crazy to be finally experiencing these symptoms as THE PATIENT! From morning sickness (AKA night sickness) to extreme fatigue, I have definitely had my fair share of challenges so far. But I am excited to share my story with you all and hopefully provide some first-hand insight for other expecting mothers out there. I also put up a full recap video on my Youtube last week that I will link below for you guys to check out!
Grab a cup of coffee and let’s dive into everything I experienced in my first trimester!
Here’s a breakdown of some of the symptoms I experienced in my First Trimester:
1. Breast tenderness/pain – This was one of my first symptoms! My breasts have been so tender, swollen, and growing really fast. This might be TMI…but my nipples have been so sensitive and painful too, I can barely wear bras or have anything touch them.
2. Fatigue – This is something I knew to expect and always tell my patients is very normal. But, I am not going to lie it hit me SO hard! Throughout preganacy, your body is working hard to support your growing baby, so it makes sense why you would be extremely fatigued. Regardless, it made my 24-hour shifts veryyy difficult. So it was definitely important for me to sneak in naps where I could.
3. Nausea and vomiting – At around 8 weeks the nausea hit. It started off pretty mild, but about a week later I was throwing up every night. Morning sickness (though it comes on almost never in the mornings) is a common symptom of the first trimester. And I hate to admit I am still fighting it a bit even in my second trimester. Crossing my fingers the nausea ends soon!
My experience with my first prenatal visit & why I chose to do genetic testing:
It’s funny going into appointments with our OBGYN as one myself because I have to hold myself back from answering questions and actively encourage Cory to ask what he needs. A lot of this information already lives in my brain, but I have to remind myself it’s good to get another perspective and for Cory to be educated on everything as we are going through this together!
Our OB also gave us info for a birthing class which I felt a little unsure about at first, but I think it will actually be really fun and a great way for us to meet new friends in a similar life phase! So if you are reading this and considering a birthing class, this is your sign to sign up!
As for genetic screening, we decided to do the NIPT (noninvasive prenatal testing) which looks for the most common chromosomal conditions and can determine the sex of the baby. We did find out the sex of our baby, which is so exciting!! I am just trying to figure out a fun way to announce it to you guys soon!
