What it’s like being a Latina/Hispanic in Medicine… man, I am passionate about this one. We need more Latinx in medicine and I am here for it! Imagine being in the most stressful situation of your life, scared, hurting in pain, worried for your health & the health of your baby or family member…then imagine not being able to communicate with anyone. Not knowing the language or able to read signs around you. Just really think for a second how scary that would be. This is why I am so very passionate about my Latinx patients—why this community holds such a special place in my heart. I love walking into a room & saying “Hola! Soy la Dra. Rodriguez, como estas?” Immediately I see the smile, the grateful faces & that’s all it takes to form that bond. I wouldn’t trade this for the world. We are underrepresented in the medical field & communication is absolutely NECESSARY for patient well being & for better outcomes. If you are a fellow Latinx interested in any aspect of the medical field, I’m here to encourage you! IT. MATTERS. You will make a difference, you will impact someone’s life more than you’ll ever know. And if you’re bilingual & in medicine, you get it, you’re my people! And if you’re learning a new language or on the fence about it I say DO IT! How absolutely beautiful to be able to communicate with someone of a different culture & background.
Lo que es ser una latina/hispana en medicina️ — oh man, me apasiona este tema! ¡Necesitamos más Latinx en medicina! Imaginate estar en una situación estresante, estas asustada, con dolor, preocupada por tu salud y la salud de tu bebé o miembro de tu familia … luego imaginate no poder comunicarte con nadie. No saber el idioma o no poder leer las señales a tu alrededor. Has pasado por una situcion asi? Es por eso que me apasionan tanto mis pacientes latinx, por qué esta comunidad ocupa un lugar tan especial en mi corazón. Me encanta entrar a una habitación y decir “¡Hola! Soy la Dra. Rodríguez, ¿cómo estas? Imediatamente veo la sonrisa, los rostros agradecidos y eso es todo lo que se necesita para formar ese relación. No cambiaría esto por nada del mundo. Estamos subrepresentados en el campo de la medicina y la comunicación es absolutamente NECESARIA para el bienestar del paciente y para obtener mejores resultados. Si eres un compañero Latinx interesado en algún aspecto del campo de la medicina, ¡estoy aquí para alentarte! Harás una diferencia, impactarás la vida de alguien más de lo que sabrás. Y si eres bilingüe y en medicina, lo entiendes, ¡eres mi gente! Y si estás aprendiendo un nuevo idioma o lo estas considerando…¡HAZLO! Es absolutamente hermoso poder comunicarse con alguien de una cultura y antecedentes diferentes.
