Hey all! I’m teaming up again with The Foundation for Women’s Cancer to continue to spread awareness around gynecologic (gyn) cancer! While there are five different types of gyn cancer (cervical, ovarian, endometrial/uterine, vulvar and vaginal), today I’m going to focus on cervical cancer. Did you know that nearly 8 in 10 gynecologic oncologists said the biggest barrier to early detection of these diseases is lack of awareness, and studies show awareness is particularly lacking in marginalized communities. So I thought I would do my part and spread awareness in both English and Spanish (scroll down for info in Spanish!).
Did you know that cervical cancer is primarily caused by the Human Papilloma Virus, otherwise known as HPV? HPV is a sexually transmitted infection, but luckily there’s an HPV vaccine that can help decrease infections!
We know that awareness of HPV and the HPV vaccine is lower among immigrants compared to U.S.-born populations. This is why I’m so passionate about continuing to spread awareness – because knowledge is power! Make sure to speak with your primary care physician about receiving the HPV vaccine because your health should be made a priority!
This New Year, I urge you to make a resolution to put your health first! Together with FWC we want you to LEARN the signs and symptoms of all the gyn cancers, LISTEN to your body, and ACT to take preventative steps for your gyn health. ¡Hola a todos! ¡Me estoy asociando nuevamente con la Fundación para el Cáncer de la Mujer para seguir educando sobre los cánceres ginecológicos! Hay 5 tipos diferentes de cánceres ginecológicos (cervical, ovario, endometrial/uterino, vulvar y vaginal), pero hoy me enfocaré en el cáncer cervical. ¿Sabías que casi 8 de cada 10 oncólogos ginecológicos dijeron que la mayor barrera para la detección temprana de estas enfermedades es la falta de conciencia, y los estudios muestran que la conciencia es especialmente deficiente en comunidades marginadas? Así que pensé en hacer mi parte y educar en inglés y español.
¿Sabías que el cáncer cervical es causado principalmente por el Virus del Papiloma Humano, también conocido como VPH? El VPH es una infección de transmisión sexual, ¡pero afortunadamente hay una vacuna contra el VPH que puede ayudar a reducir las infecciones!
Sabemos que el conocimiento sobre el VPH y la vacuna contra el VPH es menor entre los inmigrantes en comparación con las poblaciones nacidas en EE. UU. ¡Por eso estoy tan apasionado/a de seguir educando, porque el conocimiento es poder! ¡Asegúrate de hablar con tu médico de atención primaria sobre recibir la vacuna contra el VPH, porque tu salud debe ser una prioridad!
Este Año Nuevo, te urjo que hagas una resolución para poner tu salud en primer lugar. ¡Junto con la FWC queremos que APRENDAS los signos y síntomas de todos los cánceres ginecológicos, ESCUCHES a tu cuerpo y ACTÚES tomando medidas preventivas para tu salud ginecológica!
